Lake NAKURU

Lake Nakuru stands proudly as one of Kenya’s premier national parks, embraced by rugged escarpments, swathes of acacia woodland, and the allure of a cascading waterfall. Revered by bird enthusiasts, it’s hailed as a haven for ornithologists. Situated just a three-hour drive from Nairobi, its strategic location offers seamless access to the iconic Maasai Mara. Nestled within the Rift Valley, Lake Nakuru sits at an elevation of 1,754 meters above sea level.

Once dubbed the ‘Pink Lake’ for hosting over a million Lesser flamingos along its shallow, alkaline shores, Lake Nakuru’s landscape underwent a transformation in 2014 due to rising water levels, prompting the flamingos to seek refuge elsewhere, though they are gradually returning. The lake remains teeming with diverse avian life, including pelicans, marabou storks, seagulls, avocets, plovers, and stilts. Meanwhile, the park’s rugged terrain, adorned with acacia groves and rocky cliffs, provides sanctuary for Verreaux’s eagles, magnificent fish eagles, vultures, and wood hoopoes.

The parklands are home to a plethora of wildlife, including buffaloes, waterbucks, gazelles, and impalas, while the rare and majestic Rothschild giraffes gracefully traverse the riverine forests of acacia, occasionally venturing onto the open plains. Lions, leopards, hyenas, and jackals are frequent sightings, alongside the enduring presence of black and white rhinos, safeguarded within Kenya’s premier rhino sanctuary.
