Zanzibar

Zanzibar comprises Zanzibar and Pemba Islands, along with several islets, situated in the Indian Ocean approximately 25 miles off the Tanzanian coast and 6° south of the equator. Zanzibar Island, locally known as Unguja but internationally recognized as Zanzibar, stretches 60 miles in length and 20 miles in width, covering an area of around 650 square miles. It is renowned for its stunning sandy beaches adorned with coral reefs and the enchanting allure of historic Stone Town, hailed as the sole functioning ancient town in East Africa.

Stone Town, the venerable city and cultural nucleus of Zanzibar, has retained its essence over the past two centuries. Its labyrinthine alleys, vibrant markets, mosques, and majestic Arab residences stand as a testament to the opulence once rivalled by their owners. This rivalry is evident in the elaborate brass-studded, intricately carved wooden doors, showcasing over 500 distinct designs.

Exploring the captivating maze of narrow streets and pathways in Stone Town can easily fill numerous leisurely hours and days. Recognizing its significance, Stone Town was recently designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.

The radiant white beaches of Zanzibar, caressed by the tranquil turquoise waters of the Indian Ocean, offer an idyllic setting for relaxation, sunbathing, and respite from bustling sightseeing activities.

Zanzibar’s beaches are paradisiacal, adorned with charming fishing villages where life maintains its simplicity, untouched by time. With over 25 stunning beaches, some secluded and serene, the only sound disrupting the tranquility is the gentle lapping of the ocean waves. Additionally, Zanzibar boasts several small offshore islands ideal for day trips. Among these, Prison Island (or Changu Island) stands out as a popular tourist destination, easily accessible from Stone Town. Originally intended by Arabs for holding rebellious slaves, and later housing a British-built jail that remained unused, Prison Island now offers visitors a glimpse into its intriguing history.
