Nairobi
Nairobi, the capital city of Kenya, stands as the largest metropolis and serves as the central hub for embarking on safaris in the region. Its growth stemmed from the establishment of a supply depot known as “Mile 327” during the construction of the Kenya-Uganda Railway in 1899. Today, a Railway Museum honors the laborers and engineers who contributed to the railway’s development, showcasing original wagons and engines shipped piece by piece from India by the British.
Known as “The Green City in the Sun,” Nairobi boasts numerous recreational parks and the Nairobi Arboretum, highlighting Kenya’s diverse flora. The National Museum features historical artifacts, including art and weapons from Kenya’s 42 tribes, archaeological findings from various sites, and a modern art and culture section hosting various performances.
Nairobi offers a plethora of attractions such as restaurants, clubs, shops, and markets. Visitors can explore the Karen Blixen house, Giraffe Centre, Snake Park and Aviary, Bomas of Kenya Cultural Centre with daily traditional dance performances, and the David Sheldrick Wildlife Trust, an orphanage rehabilitating elephants and rhinos before releasing them into the wild. Giraffe Centre
The Giraffe Centre is conveniently located just 5 km away from the town centre. It was established with the primary aim of conserving the endangered Rothschild giraffe species, which is native to the grasslands of East Africa. The initiative was spearheaded by Jock-Melville, the Kenyan grandson of a Scottish Earl, and his wife Betty. They began the program by capturing a baby giraffe and initiating a breeding program at their residence in Langata, which is now the site of the present Centre.
Over the years, the program has achieved significant success, leading to the introduction of several breeding pairs of Rothschild giraffes into Kenyan National Parks. The main highlight for visitors is the opportunity to feed the giraffes from a raised observation platform, while also observing warthogs that freely roam alongside the giraffes.
