Mt Kilimanjaro
Mount Kilimanjaro, standing majestically at 5,895 meters, is a stunning, snow-capped peak. As the tallest mountain in Africa, it is also designated as a national park, showcasing diverse landscapes ranging from lush mountain rainforests to scrublands, alpine moorlands, and finally, snow and ice fields at its summit.
Before the missionary Johannes Rebmann’s discovery of the mountain in 1848 for the western world, ancient Swahili and Arab legends spoke of a formidable inland mountain. According to these legends, atop this mountain lived a fearsome deity who punished intruders by rendering their hands and feet immobile—an interpretation of the phenomenon of freezing, which was unfamiliar to the inhabitants of the tropical shores. These poetic descriptions captured the imagination of the locals, reflecting their attempt to comprehend a natural occurrence beyond their realm of experience.
