Dar Es Salaam
In the late 19th century, Sultan Sayyid Majid of Zanzibar initiated the transformation of a humble fishing village, then known as a “Haven of Peace,” into what is now Dar es Salaam, Tanzania’s primary administrative and commercial hub, developed over two centuries.
Despite its current bustling population of over 3 million, Dar es Salaam has retained its relaxed and easygoing ambiance, reflecting a harmonious blend of African and Oriental cultures.
Winding narrow streets and historic low-rise buildings from the Arab era intermingle with vibrant traditional African roadside markets, offering an array of spices, tropical fruits, and handicrafts. Skyscrapers coexist with the “Hall of Man,” a museum showcasing significant archaeological findings from the Olduvai Gorge, including the skull of Australopithecus Boisei and artifacts from the ancient Shirazi civilization of Kilwa. The city also features modern Tanzanian art, including Tingatinga paintings, available at various open-air markets.
